Chico Silva

b. Presidente Dutra, Maranhão

Chico Silva was born in Presidente Dutra, Maranhão. Since the age of nineteen he has been based in Anápolis, where he lives and keeps his studio.

A self-taught painter, draughtsman and sculptor, his work is characterised by intense line, colour and narrative. He produces compulsively, using many different materials for his drawings — notebook paper, canvas, cardboard, packaging, plywood and more. Anything can serve as a support.

His work addresses gender, gender violence, political structure and positioning, human relations, marginalisation, eroticisation and urban scenes, often through anthropomorphic and symbolic figures. With a strong social and political questioning, Chico Silva builds a sure bridge between popular art and social debate.

Artist biographies are translated from the collection's Portuguese records.
