Dora Longo Bahia

A multimedia artist whose work, begun in the 1980s, addresses violence, sex, death and institutional critique. In recent years her production has moved closer to social and political critique, joining collective projects that appropriate images as a form of activism. She has also worked in cinema with the feature O Caso Dória (2016), an essay film on an interpretation of hysteria, the role of art and the place of the artist. In Brasil x Argentina (2016) she filmed and photographed the effects of global warming in the Amazon and Patagonia, invoking a 1978 World Cup match to link the violence and disaster of environmental policy in both countries to the context of their military dictatorships.

She teaches at ECA/USP, where she also completed a doctorate in visual poetics, and holds a postdoctoral degree in Philosophy from FFLCH/USP. She exhibits regularly in Brazil and abroad, having taken part in major exhibitions including the 28th São Paulo International Biennial (2008), Panorama da Arte Brasileira at the Museu de Arte Moderna (2005) and the 6th Havana Biennial (1997). Her work is held in collections including the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, MAM São Paulo, MASP and the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO).
