Art and Collecting

Two collectors and a curator discuss the role of collecting in the formation of the Brazilian art system, within the education programme of the exhibition Trajetórias — Contemporary Art from Pará.

The conversation was part of the education programme of Trajetórias — Contemporary Art from Pará (1959–2026), the first exhibition selected under the 2026-2027 Occupation Open Call of the Centro Cultural Banco da Amazônia. Curated by Vânia Leal, the show brought together more than 130 artists from the contemporary scene of Pará, with works from the Eduardo Vasconcelos Collection.

The economic argument

“Art collecting plays a significant part in consolidating the art market in Brazil from an economic standpoint. In acquiring works, collectors inject resources into the artistic system and contribute to the appreciation of every agent involved. This movement stimulates production, strengthens events and broadens the professionalisation of the market, besides influencing prices and trends.”

The cultural argument

“From a cultural standpoint, collecting contributes to the preservation and diffusion of Brazilian artistic production. By gathering and conserving works, collectors help build narratives about art in the country and prevent the erasure of artists and movements. When these collections are shared with the public, they also widen access to art and strengthen the cultural formation of society.”
