About the artist
José Roberto Freitas, known as Beto Pezão, was born in Santana do São Francisco, Sergipe, on 11 December 1952. His father was a sculptor, and from him he learned the art of carving very early. At six he was given a small lathe; by nine he was already selling some of his pieces at the market.
From the gentle movement of his hands come exquisite pieces, modelled in clay with delicacy and an impressive wealth of detail. His figures portray the life and history of the people of the sertão. His style is unmistakable. The large feet appeared when the artist realised that some figures lacked stability, so he lengthened their feet to give them more support.
