About the artist

“Salvador, 1968. Lives and works in Salvador, Brazil.

Visual artist, photographer and visual alchemist. He holds a doctorate in visual arts (UFRGS), a master's in visual arts (UFBA) and a BA in fine arts (UFBA).

Eriel Araújo's work is based on the observation, interpretation and articulation of social and personal facts, according to chosen procedures, materials and languages gathered around an idea. That idea often consists in returning the image to the material or situation that gave rise to it. At other times it proposes detours, counterpositions and even transformations in the works, capable of altering their qualities through the contact between materials and time. The result is a kind of alchemy of art.

As a multimedia artist, Eriel works with photographic, graphic, sculptural, ceramic, pictorial and video processes. He proposes situations in which iconographic, material and conceptual elements of social phenomena gather in a single place, so that such combinations activate a sense of coexistence between the self and things. He describes his work as a hybrid result, established through strategies that configure other possible realities in the encounter with the art object — allowing a universe always open to new arrangements, and generating a kind of conflict between the appearance of the image and its meanings.”
