About the artist
Hermes Araújo is a ceramist and visual artist born in Lençóis, Bahia, where he lives and works.
Inspired by his father, the renowned artist Jotacê, Hermes showed an early interest in drawing and ceramics. He began making work at the age of eight under his father's supervision. Today he works alongside Mestre Jotacê, creating pieces that reflect the rich culture of Brazil, Bahia and the north-east. His repertoire includes figures from Catholicism — angels and saints — from Afro-Brazilian religions — orixás and entities — as well as Indigenous figures and the animals and flowers of Brazilian fauna and flora. His work is marked by vibrant colour and a strong connection to Brazilian, and especially Bahian, culture, carrying the narrative and affective character so present in popular art.
