About the artist

Pascal Héranval is a French visual artist, born in 1958 in Canteleu, with a strong connection to Brazil. He is known for works that go beyond cartography, using old maps as the ground for exuberant illustrations of nature, beings and territories.

Before devoting himself to visual art, Héranval focused on music until 1999. He lived and worked in Brazil between 1988 and 2002. During a long period in Salvador, Bahia, he was deeply influenced by naïve painting, by cordel literature and by the woodcuts of the north-east. He studied printmaking at the Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia (MAM-BA) between 1999 and 2001.
