Wando das Carrancas - Nivandro Félix de Oliveira. Untitled. n.d.
Wood sculpture
About the artist
The task of producing the symbol of the Velho Chico — the São Francisco river — is now shared with his son Nivandro Félix de Oliveira, 48, known as Vando das Carrancas.
Vando tried other professions, from accountant to electrician, but his passion for craft won out. “I could see the carranca's path fading a little, people leaving the tradition behind. So I stopped doing it as a hobby, and now my profession is precisely this: maker of carrancas.”
