Intaglio print on paper
About the artist
Edgard Cognat was born in Rio de Janeiro on 13 March 1919 and died in the same city on 16 August 1994. At seventeen he entered the fine arts course of Professor Carlos Chambelland — his only master — with whom he studied drawing, painting and decorative art. In printmaking he was self-taught. After researching in depth the methods of the great European masters of the medium, among them Rembrandt, Rubens and Dürer, he began his first experiments in various print processes: etching on metal, woodcut and lithography. His estate includes some 150 plates.
